On this exciting adventure we’ll be traveling WAY off the beaten path to the far south of Costa Rica, on the wild and wooly Osa Peninsula near the Panama border. To get to Jinetes we’ll need to use light planes capable of landing on jungle airstrips, then board boats designed to transport us down the Sierpe River to the Pacific, eventually landing on the shore of Drake Bay. The seaside accommodations are perfect for the area, very beautiful and comfortable. All of the food is home-made, and the local folks (all 300 of them) are wonderful. You can check out the resort at www.jinetesdeosa.com.
The diving in Costa Rica tends to get better as you go south, and you can’t get any farther south than this! With warmer and clearer water than anywhere else in Costa Rica, this area is considered to have the best diving and snorkeling at the offshore island of Cano. The offshore ecosystem in Costa Rica is completely different from the Caribbean, so therefore the diving, snorkeling and marine life is very different from the Caribbean. The water is rich with plankton which limits visibility to 40-80 feet, but brings in lots of big fish and different species you’ll never see in Caribbean waters. On one dive in Costa Rica I saw 14 moray eels in 5 different species, and 5 different species of rays! Large schools of fish are common on some dives, too.
But Costa Rica is not JUST about diving and snorkeling; it’s about outdoor adventure and experiencing nature at its best. With this in mind we’ll also have a day of horseback riding through the jungle, a thrilling zip line canopy tour, and an incredible hike in the rainforest with a local guide.
Inland is Corcovado National Park, one of the last great wild places in Central America. A day hike through its rainforest vastness with a local guide is a wonderful experience. We also have one of the best horseback rides ever, winding our way up countless rivers and streams, past waterfalls and towering jungle trees festooned with vines, oftentimes the horses will be swimming with us alongside!
Evenings are spent at the tiny bar-restaurant reliving the day’s adventures and watching the antics of the local monkey troop. After dark you can even take a night-time hike with a local fauna expert to see the weird critters that come out. Talk about being in the middle of a Discovery Show!
You’ll also have 2 free days to explore more or relax at Jinetes. You can opt for more rainforest hikes, more dive days, snorkeling and hiking at Cano Island, birdwatching with a local expert, more horseback riding, kayaking and exploring along the coast, or night hikes.
However you choose to spend your time, you’ll never forget your incredible adventures with us in the unsurpassed beauty of Costa Rica’s remote Osa Peninsula.
