Just about every popular dive magazine—in each and every issue---features a story about Bonaire, a tropical Dutch island just 30 miles off the coast of South America. The world seems to agree that the diving is spectacular, with fabulous reefs just a few feet offshore! Whether you “live to dive” or just enjoy the beauty of shallow water snorkeling, this is possibly the most perfect dive spot on earth. And you’ll have no problem locating dive sites...grab your dive gear, jump in your vehicle and head out along the island’s shoreline road, watching for the tell-tale sign of a dive site---a yellow rock along the road. Park and venture just a few steps into the warm, clear waters of the southern Caribbean. During our week of fun-in-the-sun we will be staying at the beautiful Buddy’s Dive Resort and exploring as much as we can of this beautiful island. We know all the best dive sites, restaurants, and hang-outs. Join the gang for evenings out or just plan to get away from it all...either way...you won’t be sorry...unless you’re still in the states when November rolls around!
Day 1 You should arrive at the resort in the afternoon with plenty of time to do an afternoon shore dive and even a night dive on Buddy’s House Reef. The 3 reefs behind the resort (Buddy’s, Bari, Scientifico) are rated among the best in the Caribbean for species diversity and life! Do your Open Water dives here, and start your Advanced or Night Specialty tonight!
Day 2 After breakfast we’ll load up our trucks and head out to some of our favorite southern dive sites. Angel City, Invisibles, and Alice in Wonderland are perfect for Digital Photo...lots of fish, lots of critters, lots of coral! Back to the resort for lunch and more tanks...then an afternoon dive at Oil Slick Leap or one of the nearby sites to the north. Lots of dinner choices tonight….our favorite pizza place, or maybe one of the great seafood spots in town. Or maybe a night dive and dinner at the resort?
Day 3 Today we head north to the rocky cliffs to dive Karpata, Ol’ Blue, and 1000 Steps. Schools of jacks, squid, and tropicals abound while lush gorgonians carpet the bottom, perfect for REEF fish counts or CoralWatch surveys. We’ll have lunch in a fun local joint in the town of Rincon, then take a scenic drive along the windswept northeast shore, avoiding the wild donkeys along the road. A short hike will bring us to some impressive cliffs and crashing surf.
Day 4 The far southern tip of the island has some spectacular dive sites alongside the surreal landscape of salt flats and flamingoes. This morning we’ll explore the underwater landscape as currents flowing around the south point bring in lots of bigger fish...here is your best chance to see large pelagics. After we work up an appetite we’ll do lunch at a nearby surf shack on the beach. This afternoon would be great for exploring shops and streets of the quaint town of Kralendijk . As always, lots of dinner choices tonight, and night dives, too!
Day 5 Get Lost Day! For our morning dives we’ll pick a couple lesser-known dive sites, or maybe some we haven’t visited in years….The rest of the day is wide open for activities, diving, snorkeling, or just kicking back...a guided mangrove kayak-snorkel trip is a fascinating way to spend the afternoon. Or if excitement is your thing, then plan to do a guided dive on the wild and wooly “east-side”! Tonight we’ll have a wine and cheese party around the pool to kick off a fun evening in town.
Day 6 Today is “expedition day”! We’ll load up and caravan to Washington Slagbaai National Park, a rugged, hilly landscape carpeted in towering cactus. Small rocky roads wind through the fantastic landscape, leading to remote picturesque bays with great diving! We’ll explore the park both above and below the waves...and have a picnic lunch in one of the prettiest spots on the island. Tonight is the last chance for a night dive...don’t pass it up!
Day 7 Since we’re flying out tomorrow, today is free to do whatever you want. You could even work in a last morning dive! One of our favorite activities is to spend the day at Jibe City, a world-class windsurf beach that’s perfect for beginners or experts. Windsurfing in the huge shallow bay and relaxing in the shade with a cold beverage is the perfect ending to a wonderful week!
Day 8 This afternoon we return home to the frozen north….time to plan another diving adventure!
